Starting from the 11th century, the power of Bishop Uyghur gradually extended throughout Andorra, and in 1133 Andorra became its diocese. In the 13th century, Count de Foa of France and Bishop of Usher competed for sovereignty over Andorra, leading to multiple wars between the two sides. Finally, in 1278 and 1288, two agreements were reached to jointly govern Andorra and divide their respective powers in economic, legal, military, and other areas. Andorra became a principality, which lasted until 1993. On March 14, 1993, Andorra passed its first ever Constitution through a national referendum. From then on, An became an independent sovereign state, but continued to use the two major public political systems. To commemorate this day, Andorra has designated March 14th as Constitution Day.
