【 Overview 】 Located in the northeast of the Windward Islands in the Eastern Caribbean Sea. It faces the Atlantic Ocean to the east, the Caribbean Sea to the west, Martinique Island across the Martinique Strait to the south, and Guadeloupe across the Dominica Strait to the north. The island is mountainous with an average annual temperature of 25 to 32 degrees Celsius and a tropical marine climate.

Originally inhabited by Arawak and Caribbean tribes from South America. Columbus arrived on the island in 1493. In 1763, the Treaty of Paris transferred the island to Britain and it was subsequently occupied twice by France. In 1805, French occupiers set fire to Rosso, and Britain officially occupied the island after paying a ransom of 8000 pounds. Joined the West India Federation in 1958. Internal autonomy was implemented in 1967. It gained independence on November 3, 1978 and is now a member of the Commonwealth.

After independence, the Liberal Party held power for a long time. Afterwards, the Liberal Party and the United Workers' Party alternated in power. In January 2000, the Labour Party narrowly won the general election and formed a coalition government with the Liberal Party. In January 2004, Prime Minister Charles passed away during his tenure, and Education Minister Roosevelt SKERRIT took over as Prime Minister and leader of the Labour Party. [Parliament] A unicameral system with a term of 5 years. There are a total of 30 seats, with 21 seats elected as members of the House of Representatives and 9 seats nominated by the Prime Minister and opposition leaders (5 nominated by the Prime Minister and 4 nominated by the opposition leader) as senators. The current parliament will be formed in February 2023, with 19 seats held by the Labour Party and 2 seats held by independent candidates among the 21 members of parliament. Speaker Joseph ISSAC took office in February 2020 and was re elected in February 2023.

The judicial system consists of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court and the local courts of first instance. One of the six jury judges of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court must be resident and responsible for making impromptu rulings. The local court of first instance handles cases involving a maximum of EC $500. In July 2014, the Dominican Parliament passed a bill to replace the Privy Council of the United Kingdom with the Caribbean Court of Justice as the multi final appellate court.

The main political parties are:

(1) Dominica Labor Party (DLP): The ruling party. Established in 1955 and in power from 1978 to 1980. In 2000, a coalition government was formed with the Liberal Party. He won the general elections in 2005, 2009, 2014, 2019, and 2022. Party leader Roosevelt Skerrit.

(2) United Workers' Party (UWP): The opposition party. Established in July 1988 and in power from 1995 to 2000. Party leader Thomson Fontaine.

(3) The Dominica Freedom Party (DFP), founded in 1968, was formerly known as the United People's Party. He was in power from 1980 to 1995 and formed a coalition government with the Labour Party in 2000. He did not win any seats in the 2005 and 2009 elections, and did not participate in the elections in 2014, 2019, and 2022.

Other political parties: (1) The Alternative People's Party (APP) of Dominica, established in June 2020, aims to widely listen to the voices of various sectors and promote electoral political reform. It did not participate in the 2022 general election.

(2) The Dominica Team Unity Party (TUP), founded in June 2022, participated in the 2022 general election but did not win a seat.

Roosevelt Skerrit: Prime Minister, born on June 8, 1972. Graduated from multiple national universities and the University of Mississippi in the United States, with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and English. Formerly worked as a high school teacher, company consultant, and national university lecturer. Elected as a member of the House of Representatives in 2000, he successively served as Minister of Education and Minister of Education, Sports and Youth Affairs. He took over as Prime Minister in January 2004 and led the Labour Party to consecutive victories in elections in 2005, 2009, 2014, 2019, and 2022, winning consecutive terms as Prime Minister.

The economy is mainly based on agriculture. In September 2017, it was hit by the strongest hurricane in history, Hurricane Maria, causing severe damage to the island's infrastructure.
