Chinese citizens traveling to Ethiopia need to apply for visas, which can be obtained at the Ethiopian Embassy in China (Beijing) and Consulates General (Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chongqing) based on the division of the Ethiopian Chinese territory.
Chinese citizens holding diplomatic passports, official passports, or ordinary official passports can enter and transit Ethiopia without a visa for a period not exceeding 30 days. Official passports that enter Ethiopia without a visa cannot apply for residence permits or work permits. Please ensure that holders of official passports leave the country on schedule and comply with Ethiopian immigration laws and regulations. If you need to work, study, reside, or report in Ethiopia, you need to apply for the corresponding category of visa in advance.
Chinese citizens traveling to Ethiopia (including Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan) can apply for a visa on arrival upon arrival at Addis Ababa International Airport, the capital of Ethiopia. The general stay period is 30 days, but airport immigration officials have the right to refuse to issue landing visas based on their judgment.
Starting from June 12, 2017, the Ethiopian Immigration Department has partnered with Ethiopian Airlines to launch an electronic visa service, allowing citizens of 39 countries, including China, to apply for an Ethiopian tourist electronic visa online. Currently, electronic visas are only applicable to tourist visas. For details, please log inhttps://www.evisa.gov.et/#/homeIt is recommended that Chinese citizens traveling to Egypt obtain visas in advance or apply for electronic visas.
The Ethiopian Embassy in China mainly issues work (W-V) visas, investment (I-V) visas, and tourist visas to Chinese citizens. Among them, the application for a work (W-V) visa requires a Chinese funded company or owner in Ethiopia to send an invitation letter to the Ethiopian Immigration Bureau for approval and stamping. After approval by the Immigration Bureau, the embassy or consulate in China will be notified before accepting the application for a work visa. The principle is that the applicant must have a university degree. After arriving in Ethiopia, it is necessary to immediately have a dedicated person appointed by the Ethiopian company go to the investment bureau to apply for a work quota or ask for a support letter from a partner, apply for a work permit at the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, and finally go to the immigration bureau to apply for a one-year residence permit (green ID). If the visa expires during this period, the applicant must bring a letter of support from the owner to the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs to apply for visa extension. After approval, the applicant must bring the approval letter to the immigration office to apply for visa extension.
Individuals who have obtained work permits and one-year residence permits must go to the Ethiopian Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs and Immigration Bureau to cancel their work permits and residence permits, and obtain a Leaving for Good visa to exit the country upon completion of the project and return to their home country. If the residence permit is not cancelled, it will affect the recruitment of new foreign employees by the company, and I will not be able to obtain a visa to come to Ethiopia again.
Individuals holding tourist visas and landing visas are unable to apply for work permits and residence permits in Ethiopia. Please leave the country within the validity period of your visa to avoid facing high fines or even criminal penalties for illegal stay. In addition, do not handle visa extension procedures through illegal intermediaries to avoid being deceived or being detained by the Ethiopian Immigration Bureau, which may result in huge fines or even detention.
Attention: The validity period of all types of visas in Ethiopia starts from the date of issuance. If you obtain a 30 day work visa on January 1st, the visa will expire on January 30th. Please arrange your travel time to Ethiopia and the time to apply for your residence permit.
Please refer to the website of the Embassy of Ethiopia in China for visa types and fees:
http://www.ethiopiaemb.org.cn/coninformation3.htm
Before departing for Ethiopia, please check if you are carrying your passport (valid for more than 6 months), air ticket, health certificate, and international vaccination certificate (yellow book), as well as the required academic credentials, skills and professional titles, proof of family relationship, and a notarized English translation certificate (which must be notarized by the Foreign Affairs Notary Office and double authenticated by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ethiopian Embassy in China). Please carefully check the validity period of your passport and visa to avoid entry and exit restrictions, and carry a certain amount of foreign currency with you for future use.
When returning from Ethiopia, please pay attention to the flight date. Ethiopian Airlines flights to China are mostly in the early morning. For such flights, it is recommended to complete the check-in procedures before 10 pm the night before.
If encountering an incident of entry and exit obstruction, please remain calm and do not take extreme actions. You can first seek assistance from the Chinese staff at the Chinese service counter in the transfer area on the second floor of the airport. In case of special emergency, please call the Consular Center of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at 0086-10-12308 and the Consular Center of the Embassy in Ethiopia at 00251-911-686415; Addis Ababa International Airport information hotline: 00251-11-6656666, 00251-11-5178526.
A passport with a validity period of at least 6 months is required for entry and transit. Sometimes it is necessary to fill out the entry and exit card in English when handling entry and exit procedures. When entering or leaving the country, one must undergo inspection by the entry and exit management authorities, truthfully explain the situation, and pay attention to civility and politeness. When encountering special inspections during entry and exit, if you do not understand the local language, do not nod or agree to sign the document at will. You may request a translator or have family and friends translate on your behalf. When the entry and exit management authorities have doubts about the intention of entry, duration of stay, number of entries, etc., even if holding a valid visa, the Egyptian side has the right to refuse entry and refuse to explain the reasons. If denied entry, the other party may be requested to provide humane treatment, safeguard legitimate rights and interests, and arrange for return. If necessary, please request to contact the Chinese Embassy in Ethiopia.
Entry:
It is recommended that Chinese citizens coming to Ethiopia receive yellow fever and meningococcal vaccines, and carry their international vaccination certificate (Yellow Book) with them for future reference. If you travel to other African countries (such as South Africa) via Ethiopia, please get vaccinated according to the relevant country's requirements and carry a yellow book with you. The yellow book must be valid and issued 10 days before the travel date.
Ethiopian customs inspect incoming luggage one by one and strictly control electronic products (such as laptops, copiers, cameras, mobile phones, etc.) and drugs that exceed personal use quantities. The carrying amount should be controlled within a reasonable and self use range, otherwise the customs may impose heavy taxes on some items.
Photography equipment: In addition to card machines, if you bring other types of cameras and photography equipment into the country, you must contact the Ethiopian travel agency or friends in advance, inform them of the model and quantity of the cameras you carry, and ask them to declare to the Ethiopian Customs and Taxation Bureau. Only after approval can you bring them into or out of Ethiopia. Otherwise, the Ethiopian side will temporarily store the cameras and other items at the airport customs in the form of storage. When exiting, the Ethiopian customs will levy a 5% re export tax based on the evaluation of the camera price.
Cash and duty-free goods: According to the regulations of the Ethiopian Central Bank and the customs, Ethiopian residents (foreigners who have obtained residence ID are included in this category) can not carry more than 1000 dollars of foreign currency cash when entering Ethiopia, and bank certificates are required when carrying foreign currency abroad. Non Ethiopian residents are not allowed to carry foreign currency cash exceeding $3000 when entering or leaving Ethiopia. Any amount exceeding $3000 must be declared. Any individual carrying Ethiopian currency into or out of the country cannot exceed 1000 birr. Violators will have their cash confiscated, fines imposed, and severe offenders will be held criminally responsible. Each inbound passenger is allowed to carry 200 cigarettes, 50 cigars, 2 bottles of wine and 2 bottles of perfume.

For cases of Chinese citizens illegally carrying ivory and other wildlife products, cultural relics, and raw ore into or out of the country and being detained, the handling process for less serious cases includes customs detention, police detention registration, court trial, payment of fines, and closure of the case before leaving the country, which takes about a week. Please remain calm, recognize the illegal facts, and obey the police's handling. The embassy will provide necessary assistance depending on the situation, but cannot interfere with the police's investigation process or allow the parties involved to be released in advance.

Ethiopia mainly issues one-year residence permits (green IDs) to foreign citizens. Foreign citizens who have been married to Ethiopian citizens for at least two years may apply for a long-term residence permit for at least one year. At present, Chinese citizens who come to Ethiopia for long-term residence mainly have the following two situations:

After arriving in Ethiopia, you can apply for a work permit at the Ethiopian Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs with relevant documents. You can also apply for a one-year valid residence permit at the Ethiopian Immigration Bureau with the work permit, which can be renewed upon expiration. With the investment permit, a one-year valid residence permit must be obtained from the Ethiopian Immigration Authority, which can be renewed upon expiration. If the work visa expires during the process of applying for a residence permit, the investment bureau shall issue a letter to the immigration bureau to apply for an extension.
At present, the Ethiopian government strictly controls foreign citizens working in Ethiopia. Under the premise of meeting labor quotas, foreign citizens need to provide notarized and double certified relevant educational or skill certificates before they can apply for work permits and one-year residence permits. Chinese citizens who invest or work in Ethiopia should obtain a notarized certificate of education or skills before going abroad, and be authenticated by the Consular Department of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ethiopian Embassy in China (dual authentication). Specific requirements can be found in the "Consular Authentication" section of the China Consular Service Network.
If Chinese citizens who have obtained long-term residence permits need to apply for residence permits for their family members, they should have their family relationship notarized domestically and authenticated by the Consular Department of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ethiopian Embassy in China (double authentication). After arriving in Ethiopia, they should apply for a one-year valid residence permit from the Ethiopian Immigration Bureau. Family members cannot work without a work permit from the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs.

The general public security situation in Ethiopia is good, and there are no vicious criminal cases specifically targeted at Chinese people, but the number of public security cases such as theft and robbery has increased in recent six months. Please choose a block with good public security to live in, check and strengthen the safety protection measures of office and residence, take measures to reinforce anti-theft nets, improve monitoring facilities, etc., make up for security loopholes, do not give criminals any opportunities, and hire qualified security companies or police to strengthen duty according to the local security situation. When going out, try to travel in groups and avoid entering or leaving remote streets and places. Avoid traveling at night and do not carry valuable items or large amounts of cash. Lock the car doors as soon as you get on the car while driving.
At bus stops, farmers' markets, and other places, there are often children begging or people selling phone cards waiting for opportunities to steal, or using the pretext of helping to steal. When criminals are caught on the spot, they should be handed over to the police. Violent robbery in Ethiopia often occurs in urban alleys or at night, where weapons such as sticks are used to hit the victim's head. Victims need to seek medical attention promptly. After encountering a criminal case, it is necessary to report it to the police in a timely manner and make a record. In remote areas where people are fierce and aggressive, in the event of serious traffic accidents, disputes, or criminal cases, one should immediately report to the local police station or surrender, and not stay at the scene to avoid conflicts with local residents.
When encountering emergencies such as theft, robbery, or violent conflicts, please remain calm and do not conflict with the perpetrator or rioters. Life safety comes first. Stay calm and respond appropriately. After confirming that there is no security threat, immediately report to the local police and promptly report the situation to the Embassy in Ethiopia for assistance.
The Ethiopian police strictly crack down on bribery. Police officers who report bribery will receive double the bonus. Please do not bribe police officers or take out cash in person.
The natural conditions in the Afar and Ogaden regions of eastern Ethiopia and Somalia are harsh, and the security situation is poor. Chinese citizens should try to avoid traveling to these areas as much as possible. When traveling within Ethiopia, please do not bring a large amount of foreign currency, otherwise it may be seized.
If you lose your passport and need to apply for a replacement document to return to your home country, please refer to the instructions for reissuing a regular passport on the website of the Chinese Embassy in Ethiopia(http://et.china-embassy.org/chn/lsxx/lszj/hzlxz)
