The country is composed of the capital city Tbilisi, 9 regions, 1 autonomous prefecture (South Ossetia), and 2 autonomous republics (Abkhazia, Azar).

In the 6th century BC, the Kingdom of Korshida, which practiced slavery, was established in present-day Georgia. Feudal states were established between the 4th and 6th centuries AD.
