In 1865, the Lopez government launched an attack on the southwestern region of Brazil to expand its territory. The coalition of Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay declared war on Brazil. The war lasted for 5 years, Paraguay was defeated, and the Lopez government ceded territory and paid reparations, reducing its territory by nearly half. After the 1870s, the Red Party and the Liberal Party took turns in power. From 1932 to 1935, the Chaco War broke out between Brazil and Bolivia over oil resources. Later, the two sides signed a peace agreement, and Brazil obtained three-quarters of the land in the Chaco region. On May 4, 1954, soldier Stroessner and the right-wing of the Red Party launched a coup and came to power, implementing military dictatorship for 35 years. On February 2, 1989, the commander of the First Military Region of Brazil, Rodriguez, launched a coup and overthrew the dictatorship of Stroessner. The first democratic election was held in May of the same year, and Ronaldo himself was elected president. In the 1993 presidential election, Red Party candidate Vasmoxi won and established the first democratically elected civilian government since 1954.

On April 21, 2008, the opposition party's "National Alliance for Change" candidate and former bishop Lugo was elected president, ending the Red Party's 61 year history of continuous rule. In June 2012, there was a bloody conflict between police and farmers occupying land in northern Pakistan, resulting in 17 deaths. The Red Party, citing Lugo's mishandling, pushed for an overwhelming majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate to impeach Lugo. Lugo was forced to resign and Vice President Franco took over as President. In August 2013, Red Party candidate Horacio Cartes became president. In April 2018, Red Party candidate Mario Afdo was elected president and inaugurated in August 2018.
