On June 20th, the Mali Federation declared independence. On August 20th, Serbia withdrew from the federation and established an independent republic, with Leopold Seda Sangor as its first president. After independence, the Socialist Party led by President Senghor held one party rule for a long time. A multi-party system has been implemented since 1974. On December 31, 1980, President Sangor voluntarily retired and Prime Minister Abdou Diouf took over. Afterwards, Diouf was re elected three times in 1983, 1988, and 1993. In March 2000, Democratic candidate Wade defeated Diouf and was elected president. In February 2007, Wade won the election again and was re elected as president. In March 2012, candidate Sall of the "Alliance for the Republic" defeated Wade and was elected president. He was re elected in February 2019. Mineral resources are scarce, mainly including phosphates, iron, gold, copper, diamonds, titanium, etc. The reserves of calcium phosphate are about 100 million tons, and the reserves of aluminum phosphate are between 50 and 70 million tons. Zircon reserves are approximately 800 million tons. Due to the implementation of incentive policies such as tax reduction and exemption for enterprises in the exploration stage under the Mining Law introduced in 2003, mining has achieved rapid development in recent years. From 2009 to 2012, the investment in the mining industry increased by 700 billion CFA francs, and a total of 75 mining contracts were signed, involving gold, phosphate, uranium, greenstone, zircon, and other minerals. The inland natural gas reserves are about 10 billion cubic meters, and the coastal oil reserves are estimated to exceed 1 billion barrels, with plans to achieve commercial development by 2024. The forest area is about 6.205 million hectares, accounting for 32% of the national land area. Abundant hydraulic resources. The proven oil reserves in the offshore area are 470 million barrels, and the natural gas reserves are 1.4 trillion cubic meters. Commercial exploitation was achieved in June 2024.
The industrial output value accounts for about 25% of the gross domestic product. There are over 500 enterprises nationwide, with 85% of factories concentrated in Dakar. The food processing industry is the most important industrial sector, accounting for about 40% of the annual industrial added value. The chemical industry accounts for 12% of the annual industrial added value, mainly producing phosphates and fertilizers. The phosphate production in 2010 was 1.055 million tons. In recent years, the automotive assembly industry has developed rapidly. In 2003, a joint venture was established with India's Tata International to produce cars, and in 2008, a sedan assembly factory was established with Iran's KHODRO company. In addition, the construction industry has experienced rapid development in recent years due to the government's vigorous efforts in infrastructure construction.
The agricultural output value accounts for about 18% of the gross domestic product. The agricultural population accounts for over 60% of the total population in the country. There are 8.157 million hectares of arable land and 2.46 million hectares of arable land. The main cash crops are peanuts and cotton. In 2011, the peanut planting area was about 866000 hectares and the cotton planting area was 27000 hectares. In addition to meeting domestic needs, the vast majority of peanuts are exported and are one of the important pillars of the national economy. The main crops are millet, sorghum, and corn, which cannot be self-sufficient and can only meet 40% of the demand. In recent years, with the government increasing investment in agricultural water conservancy facilities, the arable land area has expanded, and the yield of crops such as rice has increased. In 2020, the rice production was 1.35 million tons and the peanut production was 1.8 million tons.
Fishing is one of the main pillars of Serbia's economy and the largest foreign exchange generating industry in Serbia. The output value in 2016 was approximately 216.77 billion CFA francs. There are about 600000 employees in the national fishery industry, accounting for about 15% of the employed population, making it the second largest employment industry.
The tourism industry is one of the four pillars of the Serbian economy and has been prioritized by the Serbian government in its strategy to promote rapid economic growth. In order to promote further development of the tourism industry, the Serbian government has reduced the value-added tax on tourism from 18% to 10% since March 2007. The total tourism revenue in 2017 was 978.1 billion West African francs, accounting for 10.4% of GDP. Tourists mainly come from developed countries in Europe and America, with France, Italy, and Spain accounting for over 50% of the total number of tourists. Tourist destinations are mainly concentrated in the areas of Dakar, Jess, Zijinsha'er, and Saint Louis. December to February of the following year is the peak season for tourism.
Domestic transportation mainly relies on highways and railways, with a land transportation network centered around the Dakar region connecting various parts of the country. Dakar is a maritime transportation hub connecting Africa to Europe and the Americas, as well as an important international aviation hub.
