(1) Holders of regular passports
1. Travel, business or transit, processing ETA
(1) Starting from September 27, 2024, all tourists or business travelers traveling to Sri Lanka can obtain an ETA to enter Sri Lanka. please visit https://eta.gov.lk Learn more information. Chinese citizens currently traveling to Sri Lanka can still enjoy a free visa policy with a stay of 30 days.
(2) ETA application procedure: Log in to the ETA system( http://www.eta.gov.lk Fill out the application with Chinese language services and accurately select your travel purpose. After entering the country, you are not allowed to engage in activities that do not match the selected travel purpose. Generally, applicants will receive approval or transfer notifications within 24 hours. Applicants who have received approval notices should download and print the notice as a visa carry on document. Those who receive the transfer notice should contact the nearest Sri Lankan embassy or consulate in China to handle it.
(3) Attention: Upon entry, it is necessary to present a round-trip or connecting flight ticket, hotel reservation, and sufficient living expenses (ensuring a minimum of $50 per day during the stay). The passport must be valid for at least 6 months.
(4) Special circumstances: If the incoming person has not obtained an ETA in advance, they can apply at the counters of Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo and Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport in Hambantota, Sri Lanka, but there is a risk of visa refusal. Passengers who receive approval notification can enter the country, while those who receive transfer notification will be repatriated by their original aircraft.
2. Except for those who can apply for ETA as mentioned above, holders of ordinary passports for other visiting purposes need to apply for visas at the Embassy of Sri Lanka in China. Please refer to the details https://www.beijing.embassy.gov.lk/cn/home-visa .
The visa requirements for the Embassy of Sri Lanka in China are as follows:
(1) The basic documents required for applying for a Sri Lanka visa are: a visa application form filled out in English, an original passport with a validity period of more than 6 months, and a 2-inch color ID photo.
(2) Please prepare the corresponding documents according to the purpose of the visit to Sri Lanka. To apply for a long-term work entry visa (for more than one month), you also need to provide: a fax copy of the approval from the Sri Lankan Immigration Bureau, an invitation letter from a Sri Lankan company, and a letter of introduction from a domestic company. To apply for a long-term study visa, you need to provide: a fax copy of the approval from the immigration bureau and a letter of acceptance from the educational institution. To apply for a long-term family visit visa, approval from the immigration bureau is required.
(3) The Embassy of Sri Lanka in China accepts postal visa applications.
(2) Starting from April 18, 2013, holders of diplomatic, official, or service ordinary passports who wish to stay in Sri Lanka for no more than 30 days are eligible for visa free entry. In all other cases, a visa should be obtained from the Embassy of Sri Lanka in China. If you want to extend your stay after entering the country, you need to go to the immigration office in Sri Lanka to handle the extension registration procedures. Sri Lanka has also launched the "My Sunshine Home Visa Program" (designed for foreign elderly people aged 55 and above who wish to reside in Sri Lanka for a long time) and the "Guest Residence Visa Program" (designed for foreign investors and professionals who contribute to Sri Lanka's economic and socio-cultural development). In July 2022, Sri Lanka will launch the "Golden Paradise Visa Project" for foreign investors and their families. Foreigners who deposit at least US $100000 in the local area will be allowed to live and work in Sri Lanka for 10 years. In November 2022, Sri Lanka launched a long-term residency visa program for apartment property holders on November 10th. Individuals and companies who purchase apartment properties will have the opportunity to be granted a long-term residency visa. Individuals who invest $250000 to purchase urban apartments are eligible for a 10-year long-term visa, individuals who invest $150000 to purchase urban apartments are eligible for a 5-year visa, and those who invest $75000 to purchase apartments in the suburbs are eligible for a 5-year visa. Companies who invest $500000 to purchase apartments in both urban and suburban areas are eligible for a 5-year long-term visa.
Note: For specific matters, please consult the Sri Lankan Embassy in China or check the Sri Lankan Immigration Bureau website https://www.immigration.gov.lk .
(3) If you come to work in Sri Lanka, regardless of the type of passport you hold, you need to apply for an entry visa at the Sri Lankan Embassy in China in advance.
2、 Entry
Before entering the country, it is necessary to fill out the entry registration card online (mobile login: https://bit.ly/3Z84tDM , Computer login: https://eservices.immigration.gov.lk/emb/eEmbarkation/ #/home page), holding a valid passport, visa (or ETA), inspected by immigration officials, stamped with an entry seal, and released. Even if you hold a visa (or ETA), immigration officials may still require you to provide relevant proof materials such as return (or extension) tickets, hotel reservations, sufficient cash or employment documents, or may refuse your entry.
3、 Special Reminder
(1) The Sri Lankan Immigration Department and relevant airlines strictly require passport validity to be no less than 6 months. Please carefully check your passport before traveling to ensure that it is still valid for at least 6 months on your last future trip (including returning to your home country). If you have changed your passport, please use the new and old passports together to fully display your travel history and facilitate your continued travel.
(2) Please fill in the arrival card carefully and truthfully, without omission. If there are difficulties in filling out, please ask the flight attendant or others to assist in filling out; You can fill out the paper entry card online 3 days before arrival (without the need to fill out a separate paper entry card upon entry), or fill out the paper entry card on the flight, or fill out the paper entry card upon entry.
(3) According to international practice, even if you hold a valid passport and a valid visa for the intended country of entry, the immigration officials of that country still have the right to refuse your entry. Sri Lankan citizens are divided into two categories: descendant citizens and registered citizens.
Sri Lanka mainly implements a nationality policy based on blood relations, where one parent is Sri Lankan and their child is born with Sri Lankan nationality. According to the current policy, Sri Lanka does not allow foreigners to become Sri Lankan nationals. Generally speaking, Sri Lankan citizens who acquire foreign citizenship automatically lose their Sri Lankan citizenship. But Sri Lanka implements a dual nationality policy, and with approval, Sri Lankan citizens can retain their Sri Lankan nationality when acquiring foreign nationality, or regain their Sri Lankan nationality after losing it.
Sri Lanka's risk level is yellow (medium risk)
Recently, the economic and livelihood situation in Sri Lanka has become increasingly severe, and there has been a significant increase in social instability factors. Street demonstrations, violent conflicts, and other vicious incidents are frequent, resulting in large-scale casualties.
The Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka remind Chinese citizens in Sri Lanka to closely monitor the local security situation, avoid participating in, watching rallies, protests and other activities, abide by local laws and regulations, be vigilant, strengthen prevention, pay attention to safety, and ensure personal and property safety. In case of emergency, please report to the police in a timely manner and contact the Embassy of Sri Lanka for assistance.
1、 The security situation in Sri Lanka is stabilizing. In May 2009, the Sri Lankan civil war came to an end. In August 2011, the national emergency law was abolished. Some checkpoints are still working, and the mine clearance work in the northern conflict areas is still ongoing. The social order in Sri Lanka is relatively good, but in recent years, there has been an increase in criminal offenses, with frequent incidents of theft, robbery, and even sexual assault against tourists. On April 21, 2019, a series of terrorist bombings occurred in Sri Lanka, causing significant casualties. The Sri Lankan government severely cracked down on various extremist forces and made efforts to restore domestic security and stability. The Sri Lankan government implemented and continuously extended a state of emergency. On November 17, 2019, after the then government took office, the domestic security situation in Sri Lanka has greatly improved. Since the COVID-19, Sri Lanka's economy has been greatly affected, with high inflation, shortage of foreign exchange and basic living materials, great impact on people's lives, and increased social unrest. In 2022, the political and economic situation in Sri Lanka deteriorated, and the overall crime rate increased. There were a total of 563 homicides, 2498 rapes, 3299 thefts, 1954 vehicle robberies, 962 extortion cases, and 156 drug-related cases in the country. There are legal casinos in Sri Lanka, but some criminals infiltrate here and actively borrow money, ultimately using threats, violence, and other means to force victims into the abyss of high interest loans.
2、 Safety Tips
(1) Since 2023, some Chinese citizens have been easily misled by false advertisements for "high salary recruitment" and have been forced to engage in illegal activities such as telecommunications fraud after coming from China. When they demand to withdraw, they have also encountered restrictions on personal freedom or extortion of money. The labor price is relatively low, and it is a labor exporting country. Do not easily believe in false advertisements for high paying jobs. Leave emergency contact information before going abroad, and keep track of your location at any time after going abroad. If an accident occurs, report it to the police in a timely manner. Do not fabricate lies or participate in illegal activities.
(2) Do not enter the casino, do not participate in gambling. Under no circumstances should you borrow money from others unless absolutely necessary and it is confirmed that there is no risk involved. Please remember: Mortgaging a passport is illegal.

(4) Do not show off or display cash, jewelry, or other valuable items to others.
(5) Be cautious when choosing to travel to the northern region of Sri Lanka.
(6) Some temples, cultural relics, shopping malls, and tea factories are not allowed to take photos in their core areas, and local authorities also prohibit taking photos with the Buddha statue facing away.
(7) It is recommended to bring mosquito repellent and other mosquito repellent drugs, take measures to prevent mosquito bites, and avoid contracting dengue fever.
(8) Please use credit cards as much as possible and avoid carrying large amounts of cash with you. If a stranger wants to teach you how to use an ATM machine, please remain highly vigilant. Please request a shopping voucher when shopping, and verify the purchase amount before signing. Swipe the card once, please do not let the salesperson swipe it again.
(9) Women should not wear revealing clothing and should not go out alone at night.
(10) Remember the phone number of the emergency contact person. In case of emergency, call for help promptly while ensuring one's own safety. If you lose your passport, luggage or encounter any other accidents, please report to the police in a timely manner and ask them to provide a report form, so that you can apply for compensation from the insurance company and handle matters such as air tickets and passport replacements in the future. If necessary, please call the Global Consular Protection and Services Emergency Call Center of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at 0086-10-12308 or 0086-10-65612308; Or contact the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka (phone: 0094-11-2676033, email:) colombo@csm.mfa.gov.cn )Contact.

The main land transportation modes within the country are highways and railways.
Sri Lanka has approximately 313 kilometers of highways (Colombo Highways, Colombo Airport Highways), 12000 kilometers of national highways, 16000 kilometers of provincial highways, and 65000 kilometers of county-level highways, totaling 93000 kilometers. The Colombo Long Distance Bus Terminal is located at the Pettah Central Bus Station. The station operates government buses, and behind it is a private bus station. Both stations have advance booking counters.
There are three types of long-distance buses available from Colombo to other cities. Ordinary bus: usually a large bus without air conditioning, with no limit on the number of passengers. Semi luxury bus or city bus: usually a small bus with 20 or 30 seats, it is not allowed to overload. It only stops in major cities, and Dim sum are available. The fare is 1.5 to 2 times that of ordinary buses. This type of bus can be booked five to six hours in advance. Luxury air-conditioned coach: Similar to semi luxury coaches, it is equipped with air conditioning and priced two to three times higher than regular coaches.
Sri Lanka has 1561 kilometers of railways throughout the country. Colombo has railways that can connect to other cities, and the train equipment is decent. The train is divided into two compartments: those that are seated correctly and those that are not seated correctly. The carriages without corresponding seats are divided into second-class and third class carriages, with numbers directly marked outside the door of the carriage. The ticket is made of ordinary small cardboard and can be purchased on arrival without being sold in advance. Passengers who are seated in the designated carriages need to purchase them in advance, especially for trains with tight routes and fewer seats, such as seat tickets for the Tea Garden train (Nuwara Eliya to Eller) and sleeper tickets from Colombo to Trincomalee. The tickets are all printed paper tickets, which are relatively large in size. The carriages with corresponding seats are divided into first class, second class, and third class. In addition to numbers, there are various letters at the door of the carriage. The train station in Colombo is very close to the Fort in the financial district, with direct trains to the ancient city of Kandy, the southern coast, and other places. For detailed information, please visit the Sri Lanka Railways website www.railway.gov.lk/web.
Special reminder: Sri Lanka is claimed by many travel magazines as the "country with the world's most beautiful train routes", and some online travel guides even promote thrilling and exciting ways such as "hanging trains". Sri Lanka's trains do not have closed doors, and the facilities are old and very crowded. There have been multiple incidents of passengers accidentally falling out of the train and getting injured or even killed. When taking a train, be sure to stay away from the train door, and never "hang the train" or lean outside to take photos to avoid danger. There are mostly no guardrails near the railway crossings and tracks. Please do not walk, take photos or stay near the tracks to avoid accidents.
The main ports in Sri Lanka include Colombo, Gol, and Trincomalee, mainly for freight transportation, with very little passenger service.
The main modes of transportation in the city are buses, tricycles, and taxis.
1、 There are two types of public transportation services in Sri Lanka: one is operated by government companies (locally known as CTB buses), and the other is operated by private companies. The buses are relatively crowded and cheap, with most of them running open.
2、 Three wheeled motorcycle. Three wheeled motorcycles are the main rental cars in Sri Lanka, which can be parked at your fingertips and are very convenient. However, their safety is average, and most cars in Colombo are equipped with meters
3、 Renting a sedan. Airports and hotels generally provide car rental services. You can ask a waiter to help book a car, or directly call a car rental company to book a car. The main car rental company's phone number is 011-256656611-2577577011-258588. Rental cars are priced using a meter and require advance booking.
4、 Special reminder: Vehicles with right-hand drive and left-hand drive are traveling at a fast speed. If participating in a tour group, one should seek out a reputable travel agency and request that the agency remind drivers to drive safely. Fasten your seat belt during the ride. The traffic condition on the road is poor, so it is recommended to avoid self driving tours as much as possible. When crossing the road, try to use pedestrian crossings and remember to observe the right side first, then the left side; If you travel on a three wheeled motorcycle without a local meter, you need to agree on the price in advance before boarding; The driving rules on the road: large vehicles have priority and small vehicles should avoid large vehicles; Whether the vehicle is equipped with air conditioning depends on pollution, temperature, and humidity, and cannot fully meet the requirements of customers; At present, instant ride hailing services such as PICKME or Uber are available in the Colombo area, but most drivers are ordinary car owners without operating qualifications and must pay attention to safety.
