Residency and Naturalization

1、 Residence

The duration of stay for a one-time entry visa is the duration indicated on the visa page.

The Turkish Cabinet passed a decree in October 2011 to amend the relevant provisions on the duration of foreigners' stay in Turkey, changing the duration of foreigners' stay in Turkey to "no more than 90 days within 180 days", which took effect on February 1, 2012. This regulation also applies to visa free passport holders. Visa free individuals must have their visa stamp stamped by the Turkish authorities at the port of entry to determine their entry time. For those who have a visa free period and a visa validity period of less than 90 days, if necessary, they can apply for an extension to 90 days within the territory of Turkey.

If you plan or have to stay in Türkiye for more than the allowed period, you need to obtain the approval of the Immigration Department of the Ministry of Interior of Türkiye and apply for a residence permit. Residence applications generally require three conditions to be met: verifiable place of residence, proof of living income, and payment of medical insurance.

Foreigners who have long-term residence in Türkiye, such as employment and study abroad, need to apply for a residence permit at the local immigration office. The residence permit should be applied for at the local immigration office within 30 days after arriving in Türkiye. The applicant generally needs to provide a work permit, a work visa, a study visa or a research visa, and a letter explaining his/her details (such as whether to work, study, and marry a citizen of Türkiye). Once you have obtained a residence permit in Türkiye, you can enter Türkiye for many times within the validity period of the residence permit without having to apply for an entry visa again. If it is necessary to extend the residence permit, the extension or renewal procedures should be processed in a timely manner before the expiration date. If the residence permit is about to expire or has expired, it needs to be extended before leaving Türkiye. Cost: Please check the website https://www.goc.gov.tr/belge-bedeli-ve-harc-miktari . Students studying and working in Türkiye must apply for the corresponding type of residence. Unlicensed employment will result in deportation. Foreigners who have exceeded their visa stay but have not applied for a residence permit may face fines, non re-entry and other penalties when leaving the country. Specific details can be queried https://www.goc.gov.tr/ikamet-izni-cesitleri Website.

2、 Naturalization

Türkiye's Nationality Law came into force in 1964. The important provisions include: (1) adopting the principle of combining bloodline with birthright in granting original nationality. Article 1 stipulates that "a child born by a Turkish father or mother in or outside Türkiye shall be a Turkish citizen from the date of birth.". However, those who hold dual citizenship and have resided continuously outside the territory for more than seven years without providing proof of their formal contact with the territory or retaining their nationality will lose their nationality. Türkiye has more than 2 million immigrants in Germany, most of whom have dual Turkish German nationality. (3) The principle of voluntary application and government approval shall be adopted for the acquisition or withdrawal of nationality. Article 21 stipulates that "those who request to renounce their nationality or join a foreign nationality shall submit an application to the local highest administrative officer or the embassy or consulate outside the territory, and the agency shall submit the necessary case file to the Ministry of the Interior

Foreigners who meet the corresponding conditions such as living in Türkiye for five consecutive years and marrying Turkish citizens can apply for Türkiye nationality. For details, please refer to the website of the General Administration of Population and Nationality of the Ministry of the Interior of Türkiye.
